The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card is issued by Citi and is the best co-branded American Airlines credit card with no annual fee. While there are many airline credit cards out there, we haven’t seen many credit cards with no annual fee in the past. This trend has changed in recent years as card issuers seek to develop products for a wider consumer base. In this post, I wanted to take a closer look at the AAdvantage MileUp Card – it’s a card some might want to apply for directly, and a card that others might want to downgrade to to cash in on annual fees save. What does the sign up bonus look like, how does this card compare to other American Airlines credit cards, etc.? American AAdvantage MileUp Card basics for August 2021In general, I don’t recommend putting your daily expenses on an airline credit card as I think you’d be better off using a card to earn transferable points or cashback. Even so, it can often make sense to have an airline credit card for the perks offered. How does the AAdvantage MileUp Card fit into the equation – can you get big perks with no annual fee or is this card just not worth the money? Sign up bonus: 10,000 AAdvantage miles + USD 50 bank statementThe MileUp Card offers a registration bonus of 10,000 American AAdvantage miles Plus one Bank statement of $ 50 after making a $ 500 purchase within the first three months of opening your account. While this isn’t a huge bonus, it is pretty good for a card with no annual fee, and the spending requirements are reasonable. Note that if you have received a welcome bonus for this exact card in the past 48 months, you will not be eligible for the bonus on this card (however, having another AAdvantage card does not preclude you from receiving this bonus). Since it is a Citi card, there are a few other rules to keep in mind, such as that you can apply for a maximum of one Citi card every eight days and a maximum of two Citi cards every 65 days. No annual feeAs mentioned above, the AAdvantage MileUp Card has no annual fee. Not only is the card free to the primary cardholder, but you can also add authorized users at no additional cost. There are a few other things that make this card’s no annual fee status worthwhile: Earn 1-2x AAdvantage miles for every dollar spentThe AAdvantage MileUp Card offers the following ROI:
It’s noteworthy that this no annual fee card offers a better return on grocery spending than virtually any other American Airlines credit card. There is no limit to the number of miles you can earn with this card. Note, however, that the card has international transaction fees, so ideally you would only want to use it for purchases within the United States. 25% savings on board with American AirlinesThe AAdvantage MileUp Card offers 25% savings on food and drink purchases on American Airlines flights when you pay with your card. To be able to save money on purchases you would be making with American Airlines anyway is pretty awesome. Is the AAdvantage MileUp Card worth it?The AAdvantage MileUp Card is unique in that it has no annual fee and offers some potentially useful perks. It’s pretty good to get 25% back for onboard purchases, a solid sign up bonus, and 2x miles for grocery store purchases. However, in general I would comment:
Does it ever make sense to get an airline card with no annual fee?It depends how you look at it. There is little disadvantage to having a card with no annual fee for the modest welcome bonus, the 25% savings on purchases on board, etc. In general, however, it doesn’t make sense to use an airline credit card that only awards a mile for every dollar spent on a majority of the purchases. I estimate American miles at 1.5 cents each, so in my opinion it is much better to use a different card. Basically, a vast majority of people would be better off with something like the Citi® Double Cash Card (verification) with no annual fee, which offers 1% cashback on every purchase and then an additional 1% cashback when you pay for those purchases. This card also offers you significantly more flexibility, as rewards can be converted into Citi ThankYou points. Assuming you estimate American miles to be less than two cents for everyday use, such a map would be a breeze. Which American Airlines Credit Card is Best? While it’s nice to have an AAdvantage credit card option with no annual fee, I think American’s premium credit cards might be worth paying annual fees. Both personal and business Citi AAdvantage Platinum cards offer generous welcome bonuses with no annual fee for the first year. The details are as follows: Since I estimate American miles to be 1.5 cents each, I estimate these bonuses to be $ 900-975, which covers many annual fees. Personally, my favorite American Airlines credit card is the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (Review) as it offers the incredible Admirals Club access benefit for the primary cardholder as well as additional users. These cards also have perks worth keeping for the long term, including:
American MileUp Card SummaryThe AAdvantage MileUp Card is a great option for those who want an American Airlines credit card without paying an annual fee. The card offers some valuable benefits such as double miles in grocery stores and savings on purchases on board. However, I generally don’t recommend using a card that only offers a mile per dollar for everyday expenses, given all the other great cards out there. I understand why there is a card like this as there are a lot of brand loyal people out there who happily use a credit card from a particular company, even if the value is not amazing. The value of an airline credit card comes largely from the perks the card offers, and that’s why I think a premium airline credit card might make more sense as the free checked baggage and preferred boarding perks add up quickly. Personally, I only have one American Airlines credit card and that is the Citi AAdvantage Executive Card If I got a Citi card with no annual fee, I would recommend the Citi Double Cash Card, which is my favorite card for everyday use.
