While I don’t usually cover train topics on the blog (my passion for transportation is mostly about airplanes … sorry President Biden), I like to keep an eye on Brightline. Why? Well, it’s in my back yard, and I’d say it’s the coolest train service in the United States. The basics of BrightlineThe United States isn’t exactly known for its rail links, but Brightline Florida is an exception. Brightline offers connections between Miami and Palm Beach, with one stop in Fort Lauderdale. Brightline was formerly associated with Richard Branson and was due to be renamed Virgin Trains, but Brightline and Virgin split in mid-2020. Brightline has had significant expansion goals in Florida, including plans to offer service to Orlando and possibly even beyond. I reviewed the Brightline experience in 2019 and it is so incredibly enjoyable that it is hard to believe that this is happening in the United States. The stations are beautiful, the trains are new and well maintained, and the staff are consistently friendly. It’s like the US train equivalent of a golf carrier. For an additional $ 15, you can book Select, which is Business Class and gives you access to onboard lounges, food and alcoholic beverages, and more. Brightline will resume operations in NovemberBrightline ceased operations at the beginning of the pandemic and has not operated since then. This seems a bit strange on the surface, as Florida wasn’t exactly closed at that time. Many have wondered when (or if?) Brightline would resume operations, despite the lack of a schedule as of now. That has finally changed. It has been announced that Brightline will resume operations in the first half of November 2021. An exact date has not yet been announced, but we should learn more in the coming weeks. When Brightline resumes operations, all employees must be vaccinated and guests and employees must wear masks for transportation in accordance with the state mask mandate. The new door-to-door service from BrightlineOne of the challenges with Brightline is that Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are not exactly places with good public transport, so most people have to take a car to and from the train station. Brightline plans to introduce a service platform that addresses the first and last mile connections of the guests. In collaboration with Iomob, the new service will offer guests a door-to-door travel service and close the gaps created by traveling to and from the train station. Apparently, this service will offer a selection of private luxury cars, shared shuttle services, golf carts, and micro-mobility options. I’m curious to see how it looks in practice and how it differs from a ride-sharing app. Brightline expansion progressCurrently, Brightline only operates from Miami to Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach. However, the company has plans to expand:
Will Brightline Ever Make Money? Before I get into that, I would like to stress that I love the Brightline passenger experience and that I find Brightline extremely useful. I benefit from the existing Brightline. I would love to see Brightline expand to Tampa as I have family there too. That being said, I can’t help but comment that the company continues to pretend it will ever make an operating profit and is so far removed from forecast compared to reality. Brightline has already invested more than $ 4 billion in its South Florida operation and this is a pure real estate game as it is about developing properties around these stations and areas. Even before the pandemic, Brightline had a huge operating loss:
I think that also explains why Brightline has been out of service for so long when Florida is otherwise booming – investors know they won’t make any money running trains so the longer they can shut down while they have the real estate dream sell the better. However, Brightline sticks to his narrative. The Brightline CEO said the following today about making money for the company:
So yes, the company’s leadership was over 80% behind in existing markets, but will Orlando be a different story and be profitable? Even assuming there is demand (which I question) what would ticket prices need to be for Brightline to make an operating profit on the route? I just can’t get the math to work, especially considering they are probably mostly aimed at families. Bottom lineBrightline has announced that it will resume operations in November 2021. I am very excited that this is a service that I have found very useful as we live in Miami and have a family in West Palm Beach. When Brightline resumes operations, the company will offer some sort of new door-to-door service that, apparently, could fix one of the train travel weaknesses. In addition, Brightline is working to open stations in Aventura, Boca Raton and Orlando by 2022. However, Brightline, which continues to pretend it will ever make a direct profit, is a real headache for me … Anyone else excited to see Brightline resume operations?

Via https://globalconnekt.com/travel-for-celebrations-and-special-events/ You have packed your bags, shipped your golf clubs and arrived at the airport. Now you can sit down and enjoy your first drink of your golf trip – so you need to make sure your destination is as relaxing and glamorous as your style of travel. How can you do that By making sure you book your trip at one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the world – when you can get in! If you are an avid golfer you may have heard of some of them, but if not, surprise yourself. Below we’ve compiled a list of the 10 most exclusive golf courses that you (if you’re lucky) can play from around the world. 1. The Old Course at St. AndrewsScotland is famous for its golf courses and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in Fife is the oldest and most prestigious golf club in the country. In fact, it is one of the largest golf courses in the world when it was founded in 1754 and is often considered the home of golf. The little catch is that membership for the club is by invitation only and there are only 2,400 members from around the world. But as such an exclusive and prestigious club, it absolutely had to be on the list. 2. National Golf Club AugustaThe Augusta National Golf Club is located in Georgia and consists of only 300 members, including Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. It has been voted the number one golf club in the United States, although the entry fees are pretty impressive, ranging from $ 250,000 to $ 500,000, making it easy to see why it’s such an exclusive club. 3. Shinnecock Hills Golf ClubThe Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, based in New York, has hosted the US Open several times. Perhaps that is why it was voted eighth best golf club in the United States. The green fee is USD 350 per round, but you can only play with a member and must rent a caddy as walking is mandatory. 4. Pine Valley Golf ClubAnother US golf course is Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey. Known as one of the best courses in the world, this is a private club where directors contact prospective members to see if they would like to apply. That being said, the club doesn’t have any female members yet, which makes it exclusive but also ideal for men who want membership. However, women can attend with a male member as guests if they wish. 5. Shanqin Bay Golf ClubShanqin Bay Golf Club is located on the southeast coast of Hainan Island, just a short flight from Hong Kong. Although there are many golf courses in the area, this club is one of the best. Overlooking the South China Sea and with incredible views, the extremely exclusive club only has 20 members! Yes, you’ve read that correctly. Because of this, enrollment fees can run up to $ 1 million. 6. Golf de MorfontaineGolf de Morfontaine golf course in France was designed for the Duc de Guiche and his friends in the 19th century, but has retained most of the original style and design to this day. After the Duke’s death in 1962, the club was left to its 450 members and has been one of the most exclusive clubs in Europe ever since. 7. Ocean Reef ClubFlorida is another place known for its golf courses, and the Ocean Reef Club and golf course won’t disappoint. The course, which was voted the second best country club in the USA, is located in its own community with its own runway, school, museum, marina, security guards and fire department. And if you decide that gambling there isn’t enough and you actually want to live there, you need to be sponsored by two current members and get a charter equity membership for $ 200,000. 8. Sunningdale Golf ClubSunningdale Golf Club is located in Berkshire, England, just 30 miles from London. And the club, which was founded in 1900 and has two 18-hole golf courses. If you want to become a member, you’ll need the support of a whopping six existing members to get accepted. Plus, you’ll need to play a round of golf with a board member before you can be proposed for membership – it’s really nice and exclusive! And with enrollment fees of over $ 100,000 to join and $ 8,000 in annual dues, you can see why! 9. The Royal Melbourne Golf ClubThe Royal Melbourne Golf Club is an impressive 36-hole golf club southeast of Melbourne in Australia. Founded in 1891, it is Australia’s oldest golf club and number one in the nation. Because of this, it is also one of the most exclusive courses. 10. Muirfield: The Honorable Company of Edinburgh GolfersLet’s conclude with another course from mighty Scotland. Muirfield is a privately owned golf club and home to the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Located in East Lothian, it is also one of the golf courses that are used alternately for the Open Championships. The club is one of the oldest proven organized golf clubs in the world and while still very exclusive, the rules were changed in 2017 to allow women to become members. Have you already been to one of these exclusive clubs? So there you have it, 10 of the most exciting and exclusive golf courses and clubs in the world. Unfortunately, to play on some of these courses you have to be very wealthy or be friends with a member, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not an option! So if you’re planning a golf vacation this year, make it extra special with a trip to some of the most exclusive clubs.
Via https://globalconnekt.com/the-most-exclusive-golf-courses-you-can-play-anywhere-in-the-world/ Welcome to my next travelogue series, which will consist of several hotel reviews in Los Cabos. I hope to be able to publish these reviews pretty quickly as I admit I’m a bit behind on this. Why we traveled to Los CabosAs I explained in a post this spring, we are currently living in hotels, and have been for a while. Long story short, we’re waiting for our (very delayed) new home to be ready and this seemed like the best option (I went into a little more detail about this in a previous post so check this out). Most of the time we just hopped around the United States and spent a couple of weeks in different cities, but earlier this year we made the decision to go to Los Cabos for longer periods of time. Why? Well, in July 2020, there was an amazing way to redeem points at Cape Los Cabos, a Thompson hotel. For 50,000 World of Hyatt points per night, you can book a three bedroom villa for $ 3,700 per night. So I had speculatively booked that for this spring. As the cancellation deadline was looming, we thought back and forth whether we should cancel our stay or not. Ultimately we decided not only to keep our reservation but thought we might as well stay for an extended period if we were already there. We ended up booking five hotels and staying there for about three weeks. Where we stayed in Los CabosDuring our time in Los Cabos we stayed in five different hotels – three were booked with points and two were not affiliated with a points program. Specifically, we stayed in:
I will be reviewing these hotels in detail in the coming days (I will still be going back and forth as to whether or not to review Solaz as it has mysteriously closed and there is no reopening schedule – let me know if this review would interest you or would be a waste of time). We felt extremely safe in Los CabosThis is less of a problem now with widespread vaccinations, but this spring there have generally been many concerns about the “safety” of a trip to Mexico in relation to the coronavirus (being from Florida I don’t really understand, but … ). I have to give big credit to the Los Cabos tourism sector for how well things have been handled. Since the beginning of the pandemic, nowhere have I felt safer traveling than in Los Cabos. Among other things:
It was my first time in Los Cabos and I loved itIncredibly, this was my first visit to Los Cabos. I’ve been to Mexico several times, including Mexico City (amazing city), Cancun / Mayakoba (since I’m from Florida, it has little appeal for me, as the climate and beaches feel similar and there aren’t many great ones there Hotels there), and Puerto Vallarta (I prefer Cancun, but I don’t feel like I have to go back). Well I have to say that I absolutely adored Los Cabos and would go back in a heartbeat. It could just be one of my 10 favorite places in the world. Let me explain. Let’s start with the negatives:
But then there are the things I love about Los Cabos that far outweigh any cons:
So yeah, just to chill out, I think Los Cabos could just be one of my favorite places in the world. Many of us have been to amazing destinations like the Maldives, which are perhaps more exotic and picturesque. However, it is a little oh so nice not to be bothered with a 24 hour flight (even in First or Business Class), speedboat or seaplane transfers, terrible jet lag, very intense heat and insects, etc. Bottom lineAt the beginning of the year we spent a few weeks in Los Cabos and had the opportunity to tour five very different hotels. I look forward to reviewing them as they have been excellent for the most part and I cannot recommend a trip to Los Cabos highly enough. I can’t believe this was my first trip to Los Cabos but it certainly won’t be my last. Talk about a destination with friendly service, great hotels, great food, and stunning beaches and views. If you have visited Los Cabos what was your experience like? Who loves Los Cabos as much as I do?

Via https://globalconnekt.com/traveling-during-covid-19-my-luggage-blog/ Hyatt’s presence in Los Angeles is growing very well and that is badly needed. Thompson Hollywood opened this weekend and Hotel Figueroa in DTLA recently joined Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. Another Hyatt is expected to open in Los Angeles by the end of the year, and it’s linked to Thompson … kind of. The basics of Tommie HollywoodTommie Hollywood is a new Hyatt hotel that is now taking reservations for stays on or after December 15, 2021. Tommie Hollywood is housed in an eight-story building and has 212 guest rooms. The hotel joins JdV by Hyatt, Hyatt’s mid-range collection of independent hotels. The hotel will be on Selma Avenue and Wilcox Avenue, in the same block as the new Thompson Hollywood. Tommie Hollywood will feature a one-of-a-kind restaurant, rooftop pool and bar, and gym. The rooms at Tommie Hollywood will be small – they will only be 195 square feet. The largest room in the hotel will be a “one bedroom suite” with an area of 388 square meters. So yeah, don’t stay here and expect large rooms as the standard rooms are tiny while the suites are the size of many other hotels’ standard rooms. Tommie Hollywood Awards & Points RequirementsHotels do a lot of tweaking or pricing before they open, so I wouldn’t read too much into current prices. That being said, the hotel is currently charging over $ 250 a night for a standard room, which is really steep considering how small the rooms are. I would bet prices will drop below $ 200 before the hotel opens. On the plus side, this will be a Category 4 World of Hyatt hotel:
What’s the connection between Tommie and Thompson? There are two Hyatts opening on the same block and one will be called Thompson while the other will be called Tommie, so what exactly is the connection there? There is a history:
So yes, the establishment is weird undoubtedly – Tommie was originally intended to be a Thompson Association, but since Hyatt acquired Two Roads Hospitality, the decision was made to brand these Tommie hotels as JdV Hotels. Bottom lineTommie Hollywood is expected to open in late 2021. The hotel will be in the same block as the Thompson Hollywood, except that it will have much smaller rooms. It’s great to finally have a Category 4 World of Hyatt hotel in the Los Angeles area as it is useful for redeeming points and vouchers for free nights. The backstory is interesting here too, as the Tommie brand was originally intended to be a more budget-friendly version of Thompson with smaller rooms. But strategy has changed over time and Tommie Hotels will now be part of JdV. What do you think of Tommie Hollywood?

Private jet carries 24 suitcases with cocaineAugust 2021, the Brazilian federal police seized a Turkish private jet with 1,304 kilograms of cocaine. We know the following so far:
Perhaps most interesting is the video posted online of the police making the discovery. In the video you can see how the captain and passenger are asked about the bags before opening them and then a test was carried out to identify the white matter.
The police interrogated all three Turkish crew members and the Spanish passenger and confiscated the aircraft, cell phones and documents for analysis. While I’m not an expert, after a little Googling it looks like a kilogram of cocaine wholesales for around $ 15,000 (and a lot more if it’s broken up and sold in smaller quantities). At wholesale price, that plane had about $ 20 million worth of cocaine on board. Impressive. Could it be that the crew didn’t know what was on board? In the video above we see the captain pretending not to know what’s in the pockets. Is he just looking, or did he really not know what was in the suitcases? While I have absolutely no idea how much the charter airline or pilot was involved or knew what was going on, a few things come to mind:
So yes, there is no way of knowing how much the captain or the airline knew. I think the captain should at least have suspected that something was wrong if he was taking someone on a short trip to Brazil and they were traveling with so much luggage. A representative from ACM Airlines (the charter airline that the aircraft belongs to) said the following:
Bottom lineIn Brazil, a Turkish Gulfstream IV was seized after it was caught trying to leave the country with 24 suitcases containing over 1,300 kilograms of cocaine. The only passenger on the plane was a Spanish national who tried to transport the shipment to Brussels. One has to wonder how much the crew and / or the charterer knew. At least the captain had to suspect something if he wasn’t explicitly involved. What do you think of this incident?
Via https://globalconnekt.com/turkish-private-jet-confiscated-with-1300-kilos-of-cocaine/ In early 2020, COVID-19 conquered the globe and in March of this year entire nations were locked down. As a result, most of the non-essential trips have been stopped and many people have been canceled. This also meant that the usual ski season in Europe and other popular ski resorts came to a halt, but with the change to a new way of life, travel has resumed and many ski resorts have given the all-clear for the winter season. The catch-22 for many people is that they want to go on vacation and get away from home for a while, but many are still understandably nervous about the virus and travel to different countries. If this sounds familiar, we’re here to help. Below we have compiled a list of eight of the most COVID-friendly ski resorts so that you can book your next ski vacation in safe hands and of course make your trip even easier by using our Ski shipping as. Après-ski in ItalyAlthough Italy is one of the hardest hit countries in the initial phase of the coronavirus outbreak, infection rates have fallen massively and it is now considered a safe place to travel again. This is great news if your into skiing as the nation is also home to some of the greatest ski resorts in the world. So whether you want to arrive earlier in the season or travel over Christmas and New Year’s Eve, you are sure to find the perfect resort for you. Some of the best in Italy are:
Cervinia is currently a green zone, which means that it is currently one of the safest ski resorts in Italy. The slopes in the Aosta Valley are ideal for beginners and advanced skiers and there is a lively après-ski scene for evening drinks after a long day of skiing.
Champoluc is also a green zone and is described as a hidden gem in the Monterosa ski area. Whether you ski or snowboard, you can enjoy exploring the quaint villages of the area off the beaten path. There are also plenty of restaurants, bars and pastry shops to help you refuel. Get a taste of Bavaria in Germany Germany handled the coronavirus very well and had some of the lowest case numbers in Europe. Not only is this currently a safe holiday destination, but it is also home to some incredible ski areas – perfect for anyone who loves Bavarian beer and who spends all day on the slopes. Some of the top resorts currently are:
The Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski area consists of three mountains that offer plenty of space for skiing and snowboarding while maintaining social distance. There are also enough runs for every level of skier, no matter if you are a beginner, advanced or expert.
This is a cross-border ski area that runs between Germany and Austria, but although Austria is currently still struggling with the virus and quarantine times, you can still enjoy the German side of the mountain. Described as a beginner’s paradise, this could be the ideal place for novice skiers looking to try something new this year. Enjoy the beauty of ScandinaviaMost Scandinavian nations held up quite well during the COVID-19 outbreak as infection rates were relatively low. Therefore, these countries are among the safest countries in the world. Finland and Sweden in particular have some of the safest ski resorts this year including:
If you have something spectacular to look forward to this Christmas, Levi is one of the most popular ski resorts in Lapland and is open and safe to visitors. In addition to skiing, guests can enjoy husky safaris and snowmobiling in this area of outstanding natural beauty.
The beautiful winter sports resort has many challenging slopes for the more experienced slopes, but it is also ideal for families. Sweden has not been affected by the coronavirus and is therefore marked as a green zone for visitors. Enjoy the best of ScotlandScotland might not be the first place you think of when skiing, but if you don’t want to travel too far or get on a plane, Scotland could be the perfect solution for this year’s ski trip. There you can enjoy the road trip before hitting the slopes in the Scottish mountains. Some of the most COVID friendly resorts in Scotland are:
Glencoe is perhaps one of the smallest ski resorts on our list and is better suited for beginners and advanced skiers alike. Plus, it’s not far from some of Scotland’s most beautiful towns, so you can spend some time exploring with your feet on the ground too. However, the snow in Scotland may be a little less predictable so choosing the right season of the year will make you feel like you’re in good hands when it comes to safety.
Located in Aviemore National Park, Cairngorm is one of the best Scottish ski resorts for holding snow throughout the ski season. Although the mountain is suitable for all skill levels, the fun parks, kickers and rails attract ski professionals and snowboarders from all over the world. Note: It is worth noting that while you can travel to these destinations and do not currently require a quarantine period before or after your visit, the pandemic is ongoing and this may change. Before you book anything, be sure to check the restrictions in this country so that you don’t have to quarantine another two weeks of work unexpectedly.
Via https://globalconnekt.com/8-covid-friendly-ski-areas-for-this-winter/ It looks like Hyatt is trying to expand in Europe through an acquisition, but what could that look like? Hyatt’s European growth goalsAs Skift noted, Hyatt CEO Mark Hoplamazian said in an investor call yesterday that the company is hoping for growth:
Everything indicates that this growth is Europe-focused and comes in the form of acquiring an existing brand, rather than just hoping to get management deals with individual hotels. Hyatt was focused on growing in Europe before the pandemic, but understandably those plans have been put on hold. Now that things are starting to improve, Hyatt hopes to pick up where it left off. Why, for example, Europe over Asia? Hoplamazian says the company sees more franchise growth opportunities in Europe than in Asia because Asia is “not a very penetrable franchise market.”Hyatt’s last major growth was when it acquired Two Roads Hospitality in 2018, which brought us great brands like Alila, Thompson, and more. Which hotel group could Hyatt acquire?A few things to consider in advance:
In light of this, what existing hotel groups could Hyatt possibly acquire? I got a few thoughts out of my head:
Personally, I’d love to see Hyatt take over Rocco Forte or Kempinski (in that order). This is because I appreciate it when luxury hotels participate in large hotel programs as it is a way of getting value for money and benefits. That being said, I realistically suspect that Hyatt is likely looking more at the mid-range and limited-service market, where Hyatt’s footprint is still quite small compared to its competitors. But that doesn’t stop me from hoping / dreaming. Bottom lineHyatt is looking to grow in Europe and the company appears to be exploring the possibility of acquiring an existing European hotel group. While this is not nearly certain, it does seem that there are a couple of potentially good fits. Although Hyatt’s “managed” footprint in Europe is currently quite small, I personally found the SLH partnership very useful and largely offset other shortcomings. More real estate would be a good thing as long as it doesn’t affect the existing SLH partnership. Which hotel group could Hyatt take over in Europe?
